How and when did you decide you wanted to build The Whim?
We had always dreamed about opening a space but officially took the leap into planning in the fall of 2019.
What was your inspiration and vision for The Whim?
We wanted to create a space that was open, airy, and completely customizable. Our background in event planning and design has given us the opportunity to hear firsthand every desire and disappointment clients have when planning their events from both a logistical and design perspective. Our experience in the wedding industry definitely gave us an edge into what design direction to take for a successful event space. Every inch of the space has been thoughtfully designed with our clients in mind.
What has been your favorite part about opening your own venue?
Seeing the reactions of prospective and booked clients when they see the space for the first time or come back to see the finished product after booking during our contraction- SO rewarding! Also, we love using our planning expertise to give our clients that extra helpful experience when working with us.
Do you have any words of advice for couples who aren’t sure how to select their wedding venue?
Book a space that you love and fits your aesthetic and budget. No venue out there is going to check all your boxes, but focus most on what is most important to you- whether that is lighting, the ability to customize to your style, the location, flexibility with food and alcohol, etc. Don’t reach to book something that is out of budget as it will stress you out later- try to strike that perfect balance!
Jennae and Elliot Saltzman are a St. Paul couple with a passion for creating unique experiences. Jennae has a background in wedding planning and event design and has been a planner in the Twin Cities since 2013. Elliot has a background in sales and construction and has also worked in marketing and SEO. Jennae and Elliot have two little girls, Sloane and Blair. When they aren’t planning events at The Whim, they are spending time boating and camping on the St. Croix River, hiking, making pizza, traveling with family, and enjoying nights out in their favorite city.
